DirectionsThere are six passages in this part. Each passage is followed by five questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked ABC and D. Choose the best answer and mark the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.

Passage One

Astronaut Jim Voss has enjoyed many memorable moments in his careerincluding three space flights and one space walk. But he recalls with special fondness a decidedly earthbound (为地球所吸引)experience in the summer of 1980when he participated in the NASA-ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program. Voss then a science teacher at West Pointwas assigned to the Marshall Space Flight Centers propulsion(推进)lab in Alabama to analyze why a hydraulic fuel pump on the space shuttle was working so well when previous seals had failed. It was a seemingly tiny problem among the vast complexities of running the space program. Yet it was important to NASA because any crack in the seal could have led to destructive results for the astronauts who relied on them.

I worked a bit with NASA engineers,”says Voss,“but I did it mostly by analysis. I used a handheld calculatornot a computerto do a thermodynamic(热力学的)analysis. At the end of the summerhelike the other NASA-ASEE fellows working at Marshallsummarized his findings in a formal presentation and detailed paper. It was a valuable moment for Voss because the ASEE program gave him added understanding of NASAdeepened his desire to fly in spaceand intensified his application for astronaut status.

It was not an easy process. Voss was actually passed over when he first applied for the astronaut program in 1978. Over the next nine years he reapplied repeatedlyand was finally accepted in 1987. Since then he has participated in three space mission. The 50-year-old Army officerwho fives in Hustonis now in training for a four-month mission as a crew member on the International Space Station starting in July 2000.

Voss says the ASEE program is wonderful for all involved. It brings in people from the academic world and gives NASA a special property for a particular period of time. It brings some fresh eyes and fresh ideas to NASAand establishes a link with our colleges and universities,”Voss explains,“Theres an exchange of information and an exchange of perspectives that is very  important.

For the academic sideVoss saysthe ASEE program alsobrings institutions of higher learning more insight into new technology. We give them an opportunity to work on real-world problems and take it back to the classroom.

Passage Two

The current emergency in Mexico City that has taken over our lives is nothing. I could ever have imagined for me or my children. We are living in an environmental crisisan air-pollution emergency of unprecedented severity. What it really means is that just to breathe here is to play a dangerous game with your health.

As parentswhat terrorizes us most are reports that children are at higher risk because they breathe more times per minute. What more can we do to protect them and ourselvesOur pediatricians(儿科医师的)medical recommendation was simpleabandon the city permanently. We are foreigners and we are among the small minority that can afford to leave. We are here because of my husbands work. We are fascinated by Mexicoits history and rich culture. We know that for usthis is a temporary danger. Howeverwe cannot stand for much longer the fear we feel for our boys. We cannot stop them from breathing.

But for millionsthere is no choice. Their livestheir jobstheir futures depend on being here. Thousands of Mexicans arrive each day in this citydesperate for economic opportunities. Thousands more are born here each day. Entire families work in the streets and practically live there. It is a familiar sightas parents hawk goods at stoplightstheir children play in the grassy highway dividersbreathing exhaust fumes. I feel guilty complaining about my personal situationwe wont be here long enough for our children to form the impression that skies are colored only gray.

And yet the government cannot do what it must to end this problem. For any countryespecially a developing Third World economy like Mexicosthe idea of barring from the capital city enough carsclosing enough factories and spending the necessary billions on public transportation is simply not an option. So when things get badas in the current emergencyMexico takes half measuresprohibiting some more cars from circulatingstopping some factories from producingthat even its own officials concede arent adequate.

The word emergency implies the unusual. But when daily life itself is an emergencythe concept loses its meaning. It is human nature to try to adapt to that which we cannot change. Or to mislead ourselves into believing we can adapt.

Passage Three

In 1998 consumers could purchase virtually anything over the Internet. Bookscompact discsand even stocks were available from World Wide Web sites that seemed to spring up almost daily. A few years earliersome people had predicted that consumers accustomed to shopping in stores would be reluctant to buy things that they could not see or touch in person. For a growing number of time-starved consumershowevershopping from their home computer was proving to be a convenient alternative to driving to the store.

A research estimated that in 1998 US consumers would purchase $ 7.3 billion of goods over the Internetdouble the 1997 total. Finding a bargain was getting easier owing to the rise of online auctions and Web sites that did comparison shopping on the Internet for the best deal.

For all the consumer interestretailing in cyberspace was still a largely unprofitable businesshowever. Internet pioneer Amazon.Comwhich began selling books in 1995 and later branched into recorded music and videosposted revenue of $ 153.7 million in the third quarterup from $ 37.9 million in the same period of 1997. Overallhoweverthe companys loss widened to $ 45.2 million from $ 9.6 millionand analysis did not expect the company to turn a profit until 2001. Despite the great lossAmazon.Com had a stock market value of many billionreflecting investors optimism about the future of the industry.

Internet retailing appealed to investors because it provided an efficient means for reaching millions of consumers without having the cost of operating conventional stores with their armies of salespeople. Selling online carried its own riskshowever. With so many companies competing for consumers attentionprice competition was intense and profit margins thin or nonexistent. One video retailer sold the hit movie Titanic for $ 9.99undercutting(削价)the $ 19.99 suggested retail price and losing about $ 6 on each copy sold. Passage Four

It is all very well to blame traffic jamsthe cost of petrol and the quick pace of modern lifebut manners on the roads are becoming horrible. You might tolerate the rude and inconsiderate driverbut nowadays the well-mannered motorist is the exception to the rule. Perhaps the situation calls for aBe Kind to Other Driverscampaignotherwiseit may get completely out of hand.

Road politeness is not only good mannersbut good sense too. It takes the most cool-headed and good-tempered of drivers to resist the temptation to revenge when subjected to uncivilized behaviors. On the other handa little politeness goes a long way towards relieving the tensions of motoring. A friendly nod or a wave of acknowledgement in response to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of goodwill and tolerance so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such acknowledgements of politeness are all too rare today. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.

Howeverimproper politeness can also be dangerous. A typical example is the driver who waves a child across a crossing into the path of oncoming vehicles that may be unable to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they care to.

A veteran driverwhose manners are faultlesstold me it would help if motorists learn to filter correctly into traffic streams without causing the total blockages(堵塞)that give rise to bad temper. Unfortunatelymodern motorists cant even learn to drivelet alone be well-mannered on the road. Years ago the experts warned us that the car-ownership explosion would demand a lot more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

51.   According to this passagetroubles on the road are primarily caused by         .

A. people’s attitude towards drivers

B. the rhythm of modern life

C. traffic conditions

A. our society is unjust towards well-mannered motorists

B. rude drivers can be met only occasionally

C. nowadays impolite drivers constitute the majority of motorists

D. the well-mannered motorist cannot tolerate the rude driver

53.   Bygood sense”(Paragraph 2),the writer means         .

A. the driver’s prompt response to difficult conditions

B. the driver’s ability to understand and react reasonably

C. the driver’s tolerance of bad road conditions

D. the driver’s acknowledgement of politeness and regulations

54.   Experts have long pointed out that in the face of car-ownership explosion        .

A. drivers should be ready to yield to one another

B. road users should make more sacrifices

C. drivers should have more communication among themselves

D. drivers will suffer a great loss if they pay no respect to others

55.   In the writer’s opinion         .

A. drivers should apply road politeness properly

B. strict traffic regulations are badly needed

C. rude and inconsiderate drivers should be punished

D. drivers should try their best to avoid traffic jams

Passage Five

The most noticeable trend among todays media companies is vertical integrationan attempt to control several related aspects of the media business at onceeach part helping the other. Besides publishing magazines and booksTime Warnerfor exampleowns Home Box OfficeHBO),Warner movie studiosvarious cable TV systems throughout the United States and CNN as well. The Japanese company Matsushita owns MCA Records and Universal Studios and manufactures broadcast production equipment.

To describe the financial status of today’s media is also to talk about acquisitions. The media are buying and selling each other in unprecedented numbers and forming media groups to position themselves in the marketplace to maintain and increase their profits. In 1986the first time a broadcast network had been soldtwo networks were sold that yearABC and NBC.

Media acquisitions have skyrocketed since 1980 for two reasons. The first is that most big corporations today are publicly traded companieswhich means that their stock is traded on one of the nations stock exchanges. This makes acquisitions relatively easy.

A media company that wants to buy a publicly owned company can buy that companys stock when the stock becomes available. The open availability of stock in these companies means that anybody with enough money can invest in the American media industrieswhich is exactly how Rupert Murdoch joined the media business.

The second reason for the increase in media alliances is that beginning in 1980the Federal Communications CommissionFCCgradually deregulated the broadcast media. Before 1980for examplethe FCC allowed one company to own only five TV stationsfive AM radio stationsand five FM radio stationscompanies also were required to hold onto a station for three years before the station could be sold. The post-1980 FCC eliminated the three-year rule and raised the number of broadcast holdings allowed for one owner. This trend of media acquisitions is continuing throughout the 1990sas changing technology expands the market for media products.

The issue of media ownership is important. If only a few corporations direct the media industries in this countrythe outlets for differing political viewpoints and innovative ideas could be limited.

56.   What do Time Warner and Matsushita have in common

A. They both belong to Rupert Murdoch.

B. They are both big American media corporations.

C. They are both outlets of differing viewpoints and innovative ideas.

D. They both own several different but related media businesses.

57.   Which of the following is true of the media

A. They used to sell and buy each other in great numbers.

B. They are trading each other in greater numbers today.

C. They used to be controlled by two networks—ABC and NBC.

D. They have stopped the trend of acquisitions in the 1990s.

58.   According to the passagewhat makes acquisitions easier

A. The changing technology employed by the media.

B. The media’s increasing profits in the marketplace.

C. The ever tougher regulations of the FCC on the media since 1980.

D. The availability of the media’s stocks on stock exchanges.

59.   What is the FCCs new policy regarding media alliances

A. It allows companies to sell their stocks publicly.

B. It doesn’t allow companies to sell their stocks publicly.

C. It permits one company to own more media businesses at the same time.

D. It has eliminated all post-1980 companies.

60.   The issue of media ownership is important because         .

A. it affects the amount of money the stockholders will make

B. it decides whether we can have different aspects of the media

C. it concerns the channels through which to express opinions

D. it means that more and more people will hold onto only a few stations

Passage Six

In the 1997 general-election campaign,“EducationEducationwas Tony Blairs pet phrase. Times change quickly. Education is going rapidly out of fashion.Learning”(to be exact,“lifelong learning”)is New Labours new buzzword(时髦语). The shift fromeducationtolearningreflects more than a change of language. It stems from both educational research and left-wing ideas. During the 1980sBritish educationalists got some new American ideas. One was the notion that traditional examinations do not test the full range of people’s abilities. Another was the belief that skills are not necessarily learned from teachers in a conventional classroom. People can pick them up in all sorts of ways.

All this echoed left-wing ideas that traditional teaching methods were not sufficiently adaptable to the needs of individual learners. Advocates of lifelong learning argue that it merely describes what has changed in education in the past decade. And there are now hundreds of schemes in which pupils learn outside the classroom.

Until noweducation has been changing from below. In the next few weeksthe government will help from above. One of its main projects for lifelong learning is about to begin its first pilot programmers. With funding of $ 44 million in its first yearit will coordinate a new network of learning centersthroughout the country. Traditional institutionssuch as schools and collegeswill provide training at some non-traditional places of learningsuch as supermarketspubsand churches. The theory is that in such places students will feel more at easeand therefore will be better motivatedthan in a classroom.

The new schemes allow consumers of education to exercise complete choice over wherewhat and when they learn. In the rest of the state-run education sectors(部门),the gover-nment still seems to be committed to restricting choices as much as possible. If these programs succeedthey could improve the skills of Britains workforce.

61.   According to the writerthe shift fromeducationtolearning        .

A. is but a change of language

B. reflects the traditional ideas in education

C. reflects the government’s wish to restrict choices

D. is not just a change of language

62.   All the following statements are true EXCEPT that         .

A. pupils can learn skills outside the classroom

B. students will be better motivated in a classroom

C. the new schemes are intended to improve the skills of Britain’s workforce

D. traditional teaching methods cannot satisfy the needs of individual learners

63.   It can be inferred from the passage that the new projects         .

A. are started from below

B. have begun in the past decade

C. will allow students to have complete control over their learning

D. will be carried out in the traditional institutions

64.   In the second paragraphthe writer suggests that         .

A. traditional exams can test the full range of people’s abilities

B. there are other ways for pupils to learn skills

C. pupils can learn little from teachers in a conventional classroom

D. the notion of lifelong learning is only the result of educational research

65.   According to this passagethe New Labours government        .

A. will set up many“learning centers”in Britain

B. has not changed its educational policy

C. will continue to restrict choices in all the state-run education sectors

D. is reluctant to make large investments in education

Most worthwhile careers require some kind of specialized training. Ideallythereforethe choice of an    66    should be made even before the choice of a curriculum in high school. Part Vocabulary

Section A

Section B

be liable to sth.

【考点剖析】took up“开始从事某事,占据”;took in“欺骗,吸收”;took after“相似”;took on“雇用”。

Part Reading Comprehension

Passage One

线索:文章的第1段提到“Yet it was important to NASA because any crack in the seal could have led to destructive results for the astronauts who relied on them.”

线索:文章的第2段提到“It was a valuable moment for Voss because the ASEE program gave him added understanding of NASAdeepened his desire to fly in spaceand intensified his application for astronaut status.“表明选项D是正确答案。

A. 3                         B. 2                         C. 4                         D. 5

线索:文章的第3段提到“Since then he has participated in three space mission.”

线索:文章的第4段提到“It brings in people from the academic world and gives NASA a special property for a particular period of time.”

线索:文章的第5段提到“brings institutions of higher learning more insight into new technology. We give them an opportunity to work on real-world problems and take it back to the classroom.”

Passage Two

线索:文章的第1段提到“We are living in an environmental crisisan air-pollution emergency of unprecedented severity. What it really means is that just to breathe here is to play a dangerous game with your health.”

线索1:文章的第2段提到“Our pediatricians(儿科医师的)medical recommendation was simpleabandon the city permanently.

线索2:文章的第2段提到“We are here because of my husbands work.”

线索:文章的第3段提到“Entire families work in the streets and practically live there. It is a familiar sightas parents hawk goods at stoplightstheir children play in the grassy highway dividers,”解释hawk的含义,要根据前后词的含义来判断,hawk 后面是商品,那么它的含义有可能是什么呢?

And yet the government cannot do what it must to end this problem.

For any countryespecially a developing Third World economy like Mexicos...is simply not an option.

Passage Three

线索:文章的第1段提到“In 1998 consumers could purchase virtually anything over the Internet.” C选项和原文的第3段“For all the consumer interestretailing in cyberspace was still a largely unprofitable businesshowever.”

线索:文章的第2段提到“Finding a bargain was getting easier owing to the rise of online auctions and Web sites that did comparison shopping on the Internet for the best deal.”

【解析过程】“For all the consumer interest”的含义是

线索:文章的第3段提到“For all the consumer interestretailing in cyberspace was still a largely unprofitable businesshowever.”

线索:文章的第3段提到“...and analysis did not expect the company to turn a profit until 2001.”

线索:文章的第4段提到“Internet retailing appealed to investors because it provided an efficient means for reaching millions of consumers without having the cost of operating conventional stores with their armies of salespeople.”

Passage Four

线索:文章的第1段提到“but manners on the roads are becoming horrible.”

线索:文章的第1段提到“You might tolerate the rude and inconsiderate driverbut nowadays the well-mannered motorist is the exception to the rule.”

线索:文章的第4段提到“Road politeness is not only good mannersbut good sense too. It takes the most cool-headed and good-tempered of drivers to resist the temptation to revenge when subjected to uncivilized behaviors...”,第2段明确地表示司机必须具有优秀的道路理解能力的同时,更重要的是要具有好的意识或理解力,在遇到特殊情况的时候,才能及时做出处理。

线索:文章的第4段提到“...the car-ownership explosion would demand a lot more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart...”

Passage Five

线索:文章的第1段提到“The most noticeable trend among todays media companies is vertical integrationan attempt to control several related aspects of the media business at onceeach part helping the other.”

线索:文章的第2段提到“The media are buying and selling each other in unprecedented numbers ...”

Passage Six

线索:文章的第1段提到“The shift from educationtolearningreflects more than a change of language.”

线索1:文章的第2段提到“And there are now hundreds of schemes in which pupils learn outside the classroom.”

线索2:文章的第4段提到“If these programs succeedthey could improve the skills of Britains workforce.”

线索3:文章的第2段提到“All this echoed left-wing ideas that traditional teaching methods were not sufficiently adaptable to the needs of individual learners.D正确。

线索:文章的第5段提到“The new schemes allow consumers of education to exercise complete choice over wherewhat and when they learn.”

线索:文章的第4段提到“With funding of $ 44 million in its first yearit will coordinate a new network of learning centersthroughout the country...” C选项和原文第4段的内容“In the rest of the state-run education sectors(部门),”相反。D选项和原文的第3段“With funding of $ 44 million in its first year,”也不符合。

their.

on chance opportunity不能搭配,on purpose指“故意的”。

【考点剖析】apply to“应用”;appeal to“呼吁,要求”;stick to“坚持”;turn to“求助于,转向”。

Part Error Detection and Correction

比如:a days journey“一天的旅程”;the earths atmosphere“地球的大气层”;Chinas industrialization“中国的工业化”;twenty-five pounds weight25的重量”。

2.    【正确答案】A,改为“What”。

That they were in truth sisters was clear from the facial resemble between them. What she did is not yet known. How this happened is not clear to anyone. Whoever comes is welcome. Wherever you are in my homemy only home. It is said that hes got married. How strange it is that the children are so quiet!

3.    【正确答案】C,改为“will  have flown”。

Will you soon have finished the table. When I have done thatI shall have done all I was supposed to do.

【考点扩展】连接平行结构的常用连词有andbutornot only...but also...either... or...neither... nor...both...and...as...as...等。

7.    【正确答案】B,改为“should be used”。

Printing was introduced into Europe from China. I was born in 1960. The film was directed by Xie Jin. He is said to be a good teacher.

Part Translation

Culture is the best medium for different people of different countries to understand each other. Many cities in China have enhanced their fames in the world through holding cultural festivals. It has been proven that it is the best way to promote the exchange between Chinese people and people in the rest of the world. And this exchange is not only limited to culture but has been expanded to economic and other fields.

那我们把这句可以处理成含有由两个it 这个形式主语引导的复合句,即:“It has been proven that it is...” 如第一个形式主语it 指代的是:that 引导的从句,即:that it is the best way to promote the exchange between Chinese people and people in the rest of the world。而第二个it指代的是一个动词不定式,即:to promote the exchange between Chinese people and people in the rest of the world.

4. 最后一句话可以采用这个句式结构:“not only... but also....

【词义推敲】最佳媒体:the best medium(单数);

举办文化节:to hold cultural festivals

提高知名度:to enhance theonesfame / be better known to sth. / sb.

It has been proven that...

促进……交流:to promote the exchange between...

限于……:be confined to sth./ be limited to sth.
